National Scientist Dr. Lourdes J. Cruz, Ph.D.

National Scientist Lourdes “Luly” J. Cruz is one of the Philippines’ most eminent biochemists and a globally respected scientist known for her pioneering work on toxic peptides from marine cone snails. Her research on conotoxins has contributed significantly to neuroscience, biochemistry, drug discovery, and the use of marine natural products as tools for understanding brain and nerve activity. As a member of the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST PHL), she was conferred the rank and title of National Scientist in 2006, the highest recognition given by the Philippine government to Filipino scientists. Beyond her scientific achievements, she has been a strong advocate of scientific excellence, mentoring, interdisciplinary research, and the use of science for societal benefit. As a member of the Board of Advisers of Sci&Tech Philippines, she brings moral authority, scientific distinction, and a deep commitment to nurturing the next generation of Filipino scientists. Her presence strengthens the organization’s mission of promoting excellence, integrity, and service through science and technology.
