Academician Dr. Alvin B. Culaba, Ph.D., ASEAN Engr.

President

Dr. Alvin B. Culaba is a distinguished and multi-awarded Filipino ASEAN engineer, educator, and science leader whose work has helped shape the practice of sustainable engineering in the Philippines. He belongs to the top 2% of world’s scientists in the Stanford-Elsevier List. An Academician of the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST PH), Philippines, he is recognized internationally for his pioneering contributions to Life Cycle Assessment, renewable energy systems, cleaner production, and green productivity in manufacturing. His research helped apply life-cycle thinking to biofuels and other technologies, supporting evidence-based environmental and energy policy, including work relevant to the Philippine Biofuels Act of 2006 and Philippine Renewable Energy Act of 2008. A Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering and University Fellow at De La Salle University, Dr. Culaba helped build advanced engineering research capacity in the country, including the establishment of the research-intensive PhD engineering programs in DLSU with strong international collaborations. He is widely known for championing sustainability, science-informed policy, and the responsible use of technology for national development. He received his bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Eastern Visayas State University Tacloban, his master’s degree in Energy Engineering at the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand as a French Government Scholar, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Portsmouth, England as a DOST-World Bank Scholar.


Dr. Culaba is a former Executive Vice President of De La Salle University Manila and served as Past President of the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP), the Philippine-American Academy of Science and Engineering (PAASE), and currently the Vice President of the National Academy of Science and Technology, Commissioner and Vice Chair on Science and Technology in the UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines, and Vice President of the Philippine Association for the Advancement of Science, Technology and Innovation (PHILAASTI). As a National Executive Council member, he brings together academe, industry, government, and youth to promote a culture of science, innovation, and service to society.
